BuzzFeed Studios was preparing to release a new romcom, My Fake Boyfriend, and tasked me with creating YouTube content to tie in with the film. I wrote and directed a video series featuring real LGBTQ+ couples & topics that tie into the themes of the film: representation, finding love, and unabashed queer joy.
Take a look at the videos below.
Queer Couples Share How They Met
Every couple has a meet cute. For queer people, that often happens online. And that’s ok! This video celebrates all the ways that queer people find love, whether though apps, friends, and in the case of one effervescent couple, a Queer Field Day event. The video closes with the meet cute from My Fake Boyfriend.
Queer Couples Discuss Good (And Bad) Media Representation
Any film with LGBTQ stories and characters is going to face scrutiny, not just from anti-LGBTQ groups and conservative audiences, but from within the queer community itself. We care how we are represented, and Hollywood certainly hasn’t alway gotten it right. I wanted to open up the floor to this honest conversation to not only showcase its importance, but hopefully prove to audiences that representing queer people is a responsibility BuzzFeed takes very seriously.
Queer Couples React To Queer Kissing Scenes Through The Years
This video serves multiple functions — first and foremost, a fun and lighthearted reaction video that showcases a fun variety of LGBTQ media. Underneath, though, is an ongoing conversation about who gets to represent queer love, how is it often represented, and how do real couples in the LGBTQ community want to be seen. I’m happy to report that the reactions to the kiss from My Fake Boyfriend were entirely organic and unprompted by the director.
